Thrust Area Lead: Prof. Paul G. Richards is an Emeritus Professor at Columbia (active in research thanks to a research appointment). He taught in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences from 1971 to 2013 and published major discoveries in “Nature” and “Science” on techniques that enable radical improvement in the estimates of location of earthquakes and explosions.

Prof. Göran Ekström, an expert in surface-wave signals in seismology, leads programs of research into unusual seismic waveforms. He authored seminal papers on explosion monitoring.

Research Prof. Won-Young Kim has decades of experience with acquisition of broad-band regional seismic waveforms, and their interpretation, including discrimination between earthquakes and explosions.
