Title: Improving nuclear cross section predictions by measuring neutron induced charged particle reactions at LANSCE
Mentor: Hye Young Lee
Description: Direct measurements on neutron-induced charged particle reactions are of interest for nuclear astrophysics and applied nuclear energy via improving reaction cross section predictions. With a broad neutron energy range from thermal to several hundreds MeV at LANSCE (Los Alamos Neutron Science Center), we can study neutron induced reactions by measuring charged particles. The LENZ chamber, which is recently developed for this purpose, is consisted of Frisch-gridded ionization chamber and a double-segmented silicon strip detector to cover a large solid angle and broad energy range of emitted charged particles. The internship work will involve Monte Carlo simulations, performing experiments, and data analysis.
